The Build We Didn’t Want to Let Go

Introducing the Model B: Heritage Edition

There are builds you finish and send out into the world without a second thought. You’re proud of them, every one! But, they were always meant for someone else.

And then there are builds like this one.

The Model B: Heritage Edition started as our show van. We designed it from the ground up to represent everything Exclusive Outfitters is capable of — not just in engineering, but in craft. In the kind of restraint that takes more discipline than excess. We were going to debut it at Adventure Van Expo in San Juan Capistrano, let people climb inside, and show them what fifteen years of building these rigs actually looks like when you’re not holding anything back.

A client flew down to see our inventory before we ever made it to the floor. He walked in while it was still in production. He bought it on the spot.

We understood completely.

ThePlatform: Why the 144 Wins Every Time

Before we talk about what makes the Heritage Edition extraordinary, let’s talk about what makes the Model B platform exceptional — because it’s the foundation everything else is built on.

The 144” AWD Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is the wheelbase we keep coming back to. Not because it’s the biggest. Because it’s the right size. It parks in a normal space. It fits in most garages. It drives like a daily. It doesn’t announce itself at every intersection or require a second thought before you pull into a campsite.

And yet, inside, it seats four, sleeps four, and carries everything you need for weeks at a time.

That’s the balance buyers are actually looking for, even when they don’t know how to articulate it yet. They come in asking about footage and payload and specs, and what they’re really asking is: can I live in this thing without it feeling like a compromise? The answer, on a 144” pop-top build, is yes. Every time.

Compact where it matters. Capable where it counts.

The Exterior: Java Brown and Intention

Finish in KPMF Matte Java Brown and something happens. The van stops looking like a vehicle and starts looking like a statement, but a quiet one. Not aggressive. Not loud. Measured.

Java Brown reads differently in every light. In direct sun it’s rich and warm, the color of aged leather and dark timber. In shade it deepens into something almost architectural. It photographs beautifully and looks even better in person, which is a rarer thing than you’d think.

Up front, the CAtuned front bumper anchors the stance and carries the Warn winch. CAtuned is one of the most respected names in the Sprinter build space, and it shows: The fitment is clean, the construction is serious, and it matches the overall intention of this build exactly. Paired with the Aluminess roof rack, running boards, and pop-top silhouette, the Heritage Edition has presence without trying too hard.

Out back, the Flatline Van Co. rear cargo box sits alongside the spare tire carrier and Power Lift electric bike rack (loaded, in the photos!) with two bikes. The EO Molle Panel, dual ladders, and surf hooks round out what is, functionally, one of the most capable rear-end configurations we’ve put together.

The Agile Off-Road Fox Racing RIP Kit suspension handles the road between wherever you start and wherever you’re going. Matched to tire, load, and real-world use, not just the spec sheet.

The Interior: A First for Us

We’ve built in tobacco leather. In black. In grey. In military palettes that feel like gear. But we’ve never built anything quite like this.

The Heritage Edition interior is warm in a way that takes a moment to fully absorb. The wall upholstery opens in cream and mocha — lighter than anything we’ve done before, which lets every other element breathe. The Sienna Brown leather wraps the front seating for four: rich, supple, and chosen to age beautifully over time.

Then there’s the cabinetry.

Our marine-grade aluminum cabinetry — the same construction that won’t swell, warp, or delaminate in fifteen years of real use — was powder coated in hammered copper bronze for this build. It is durable and gorgeous and smooth to the touch. It changes color slightly depending on the angle. In a build where every material decision was deliberate, this one sets the tone for the entire space.

The rear dinette and lower bed upholstery is a rich, heavy-duty wool plaid by Ralph Lauren — the kind of textile that belongs in a mountain lodge, and somehow belongs here too. The upper bed cushions pick up the blue-green tone in Scalamandré boucle in Hedgerow. The floors stay light. The soft storage — 12 custom bags and 6 deep removable gear totes — stays in our signature black, grounding everything without competing with it.

It’s an interior that rewards time. The longer you’re in it, the more you notice.

The Systems: Off-Grid Ready. For Real.

Every piece of this build was selected to work — not to check a box on a spec sheet, but to function reliably in the field over years of actual use.

Power & Climate

  • 630 Ah lithium battery bank
  • 400W solar charging system
  • Dedicated secondary alternator charging system
  • 2000W pure syne inverter
  • 110V + 12V power distribution
  • 30A shore power hookup
  • CruiseNComfort chassis-mounted off-grid air conditioning
  • Espar diesel heater
  • USB charging ports throughout

The CruiseNComfort system deserves special mention. Chassis-mounted — not rooftop — it keeps weight low and center of gravity where it belongs. It’s optimized for our pop-top models specifically, and it works. That matters more than it sounds.

Water & Galley

  • 35-gallon interior/ exterior water system with interior heated tank for four-season use
  • Exterior shower with on-demand hot water
  • Black Walnut Butcher Block galley countertop
  • Soft close drawers and storage cabinet
  • Portable induction cooktop
  • Air fryer + refrigerator
  • Swiveling TV
  • Electric Nomadic Awning

Suspension & Protection

  • Agile Off-Road Fox Racing RIP Kit suspension
  • CAtuned front bumper with Warn winch
  • Aluminess running boards
  • Rear tow hitch
  • Full LED interior and exterior lighting

Extended Range

  • 40-gallon extended fuel tank

The range question comes up in every consultation, and it matters. The 40-gallon tank takes the anxiety out of remote travel. Paired with the ARB onboard air compressor with dual-connect system, this rig is equipped for the miles that take you somewhere most people won’t follow.

Seating, Sleeping & the Pop-Top

Four travel. Four sleep. Nobody compromises.

The Mercedes-Benz factory swivel driver and passenger seats anchor the front lounge, paired with a teakwood card table and the quick-release two-seat bench with child-seat latches. Rear dinette seating for six — with teakwood dining table — makes this a rig you actually want to eat dinner in.

The EO aluminum panel bed runs 72” × 72”. The electric slide-up pop-top sleeper is 55” × 77”. Eight feet of headroom when the top is open. Clerestory windows pulling light and air in from angles you don’t expect.

There’s a moment that happens in almost every pop-top build consultation we do. Someone steps inside with the top up and goes quiet for a second. They look up. They look around. And then they say some version of the same thing.

I didn’t expect it to feel like this.

That’s the part the spec sheet can’t capture.

Limited Edition. Already Gone.

The Model B: Heritage Edition has a new owner. But it represents something that doesn’t go anywhere... a direction, a standard, a proof of what’s possible when the engineering is sound and the design decisions are made with intention rather than convention.

Built. Styled. Dialed.  Exclusive Outfitters — Orange County, California

Want to explore more EO builds?

Every Exclusive Outfitters Sprinter van conversion tells its own story. From compact off-road rigs to legacy builds that are still out there putting in miles, each van that leaves our floor is engineered with the same philosophy: purpose-built, fully dialed, and ready for wherever you point it. here are a few of our favorites.

  • Tonka – A Pebble Grey 144” Mercedes-Benz Sprinter conversion sitting on 35” tires with a Van Compass 6.3 suspension system that adds two inches of ground clearance, adjustable rally struts, and custom leaf springs. Tonka seats four and sleeps four, carries a 630Ah lithium battery bank and 400W solar system, and is built for the kind of terrain that stops a standard van before it starts. Compact in footprint. Uncompromising in capability.

  • The Ranger – A 144” AWD Model C pop-top Sprinter finished in Matte Military Green with full custom leather upholstery and teak interior details. The Ranger seats five and sleeps four to five, runs on Go Power solar and an Espar diesel heater for all-season comfort, and is equipped with an Agile suspension package and Warn winch for when the trail gets serious. It went from California switchbacks to the edge of the Pacific in a single day. That is what it was built for.

  • The Red Beast – A legacy build that never stopped turning heads. This bold red 144" 4x4 Sprinter with matte black wrap accents, full leather interior, Agile Off-Road 2" RIP suspension, and a 630 Ah lithium power system continues to prove that an Exclusive Outfitters build does not age. It evolves. Rugged enough for the backcountry. Refined enough for everything else.
